Meta Title – A meta title is a title you give that page for the search engines. Your Meta Title can be seen in two places. 1 – If you look at the very top left corner of your web browser, you’ll see your Meta Title followed by a dash and then the name of your web browser (Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) 2 – When doing a web search the meta title is the top blue link of the search result:

It is important to be very concise and specific in this field. Meaning that if you have a page about Green Shoes and that is the keyword you are trying to promote, your Meta Title should definitely contain  that keyword.
Your meta title shouldn’t be any longer than 65 characters as this is typically the longest the search engines will show in the search results.

Meta Description – The meta description field is the 1-2 lines of text directly below the meta title in the search engines. So, in the example above, the Meta Descriptions starts like this: "Shop shoes.com for the best selection of men’s…."
This field is both for the search engines and your potential customers. For the search engines, it is important that you include the keywords you’re trying to rank for on that particular page. So, again, if you have a page about green shoes, you will want to include that keyword in your description.
For the clients, it is important that the description makes sense (it shouldn’t only be a long list of keywords). This is where you can differentiate yourself from the others in the search results. Be sure to be creative and use good sales tactics to try and convert well with your online presence.

Your meta description shouldn’t exceed 125 characters.

Meta Keywords – This field isn’t nearly as important as it once was, although, it may still be fairly important to some of the smaller search engines. This is where you can list out all your keywords for the page separated by commas. I wouldn’t go overboard here and list out hundreds of keywords. Pick maybe 5-10 keywords that are directly related to the page and place them in this field.
This field is ONLY seen by the search engines, and will never be seen by your client.
By effectively using the meta fields on ALL of the pages on your site, you will come up higher in the search engines and have a more search engine friendly site.
